History of BJJ
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has a rich and fascinating history that traces back to Japan and eventually found its way to Brazil. Here’s a brief overview of the history of BJJ:
- Jiu-Jitsu in Japan: The roots of BJJ can be traced back to traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. These martial arts emphasize techniques that use an opponent’s force against them and focus on ground grappling techniques. Esai Maeda, also known as Conde Koma, was a prominent Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo master who played a crucial role in spreading these arts to other parts of the world.
- Mitsuyo Maeda in Brazil: In 1914, Mitsuyo Maeda, a student of Judo and Jiu-Jitsu, traveled to Brazil as part of a cultural exchange between Japan and Brazil. There, he befriended Gastão Gracie, a Brazilian businessman. As a token of gratitude for Maeda’s assistance, Gracie offered to help his son Carlos learn Jiu-Jitsu.
- The Gracie Challenge: The Gracies were known for issuing open challenges to fighters from other martial arts, inviting them to test their skills in real fights. These challenges, known as “Gracie Challenges,” helped establish the reputation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as an effective martial art.
- The Birth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Carlos Gracie opened the first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s. He and his brothers began to teach and promote their martial art, which eventually evolved into what we now know as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Carlos’ younger brother, Helio Gracie, played a significant role in refining the art, as he was often physically weaker due to health issues. He emphasized the importance of technique and leverage to overcome strength and size.

- BJJ in Modern Times: Over the years, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu continued to evolve and spread. In the 1980s and 1990s, BJJ gained international attention when members of the Gracie family, particularly Royce Gracie, participated in the early Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events. Royce’s success in the octagon demonstrated the effectiveness of BJJ against various martial arts styles, leading to a surge in interest and adoption of BJJ around the world.
- BJJ Globally: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools and academies started popping up across the globe, and BJJ became a prominent discipline within the realm of mixed martial arts (MMA). Today, BJJ is practiced by people of all ages and backgrounds, from recreational practitioners to professional fighters. It has also become a fundamental component of many self-defense and law enforcement training programs.
Overall, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s journey from Japan to Brazil and its subsequent global spread has made it one of the most widely practiced martial arts in the world, admired for its technical depth, effectiveness, and emphasis on leverage and strategy over raw strength.

Head instructor (Brown Belt) definitely a high level black belt, but his head coach lives in Los Angeles. So don't be fooled by the brown belt. He does have his own standard of promoting and it's pretty high. A few of his top guys would be considered brown maybe even black belts anywhere else in the area. If you want a blue belt I wouldn't miss any classes for at least a year and a half and you might want to be productive in competition.
Besides that the jujitsu is great and the coaching is seco.

If you follow mma, jui jitsu, or Joe Rogan then you've heard of 10th planet.
These guys are the real deal. It was my first time at a 10p and I was not disappointed. Nicest group you'll ever meet and absolute killers on the mat. Their blue belts seemed like high level purples. Plus they were so friendly i felt like family right off the bat.
I took the muay thai, fitness kickboxing and jui jitsu. I was rea.

This gym is easily the best place to train no gi jiu jitsu in the southeast Texas area. Not to mention the kickboxing and mma programs are excellent as well. It's a wonderful facility with tons of mat space. The instructors are extremely knowledgable and super supportive and helpful! Also, the mats are cleaned every day after practice which is awesome! The atmosphere is super friendly and all the students help each other get better at this combative martial art. The program is absolutely the b.
